What/When was it?
The Holocaust was an event that took place in Nazi Germany from 1933-1945 (Berenbaum). During the Holocaust, anti-semitism would rise due to Hitler being in charge of propaganda, he would tell children stuff like, "The Jew is not your friend." and, "This is what a Jew looks like." in school, planting anti-semitism in the minds of Germans early on in their life. Jews eventually wouldn't even be treated like people, they would even essentially be told that they weren't people, and didn't deserve to be treated as such by the Nazis, as they were going into the concentration camps. If a Jew wasn't seen as useful, then they wouldn't even make it to the camp, they would instead be sent to the gas chamber to be killed. One American soldier found a concentration camp, he saw a man, the man was "just bones with skin on it", as he put it, the man was trying to escape under the barbed wire fence, he wanted out so badly that he was slicing his back clean open on the barded wire just to get out. The soldier saw this, and cut a large hole in the barbed wire, with his wire cutters, to help him escape. This soldier would later become a help in liberating this camp.
Anna Gerut
Anna Gerut's family, going into the ghettos, had quite a bit of gold, because they had had a pretty successful business beforehand, and because Anna's father liked gold, and spent a good bit of money on it. They would they would sell the gold, to hopefully get more food, and survive the ghettos. They did get food by doing this, however, it wasn't just buying enough to survive, it was more buying the rest of the food that someone had, and hoping it was enough, they wouldn't deliver food to the ghettos, so it was just what people had, and that's it. In the ghettos many people died, rich and poor, it didn't matter. One day, they said someone, somewhere was giving out potatoes, so Anna and her sister went to get some, on the way to get food, she heard everyone running and saying that the Germans were going somewhere and taking everyone with them. Everybody was running, so Anna gets seperated from her sister, and couldn't find her. She ended up in a cemetery, and she had to climb a high fence, there were two people hiding, and she lost her sister. Later, they said that it was clear and they can leave, so she found her sister, and she had potatoes. She went home, but nobody was there, her parents and all her siblings besides her sister were gone, taken away by the Germans, she never saw them again. She later found out that they were sent to the gas chamber, and were killed (Gerut).
